Description:
Mindclover Productions, lead by 2012 IFP Filmmaker of the Year Diane Dresback, assembled a very talented team for for the Almost Famous Film Festival A3F 72 Hour Musical Challenge in October 2011. The team included Director of Photography, Webb Pickersgill (2009 IFP Filmmaker of the year); Original Music and Lyrics by recording artist Mark Greenawalt; Editing and creative genius Bob Marquis (editing awards include An Rochambeau, Uplifting Tale and Cordones); and a very talented acting team anchored by Stephanie Mello, Bivás Biswas (Paranoia), and Kane Black (Cowboy Dreams).
This was Arizona's first-ever musical film challenge and it took place on October 7-10, 2011. This 72 hour event required teams to not only incorporate this year's guidelines but every film also had to contain at least one musical moment.
"The creativity displayed by the teams was just incredible to witness." said Jae Staats, Director and Founder of the A3F. "These teams really stepped up to the challenge and made some truly entertaining short films."
Thirty-one teams participated and created films based on the theme, A Broken Promise, a line of dialogue, "Give me a second to think about it." and a prop where a character had to toss a Coin. Just eighteen teams met the 72 hour deadline and dropped off their films at Majerle's Sports Grill in downtown Phoenix.
On October 20, the Top 10 films, determined by our panel of judges, premiered in Phoenix at AMC Arizona Center 24 Theatres. The energetic and supportive crowd cheered on the delightful films that combined comedy and drama with musical moments that brought the audience to rounds of applause throughout the evening. An awards ceremony followed where the Top 3 overall films were announced in addition to $1000 in cash prizes and awards for individual achievements.
An after-party at 1130 The Restaurant ended the memorable night with a festive atmosphere where everyone was congratulating the filmmakers, actors, actresses and crew members on an amazing night of independent filmmaking where everyone became Almost Famous! "It was just one of those nights," remarked Jason Francois, A3F Assistant Director, "where things just fell in place and we had one of our best screenings to date."
