The theme was "Mythology of the Southwest". Not exactly what you would expect from a science fiction convention, but that was the theme at this year's WesterCon event held at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield, Arizona. I was honored to have been invited to do a bodypainting demonstration for convention attendees and even more honored when I asked a Native American to model for the project and she accepted. I had previously worked with Myla Leigh Chenoa on the Arizona Flag project, but at the time I was unaware of her Algonquin heritage. Concurrent with her modeling career, Myla has also gained success as an actress since then with films such as Stalked and A Shadow in the Woods. Myla was great to work with and she shared some fascinating insights into the history and traditions of the Algonquin tribe as she was being painted. The photographer on the project was Jim Goodwin, who did a fantastic job as usual. Zane turned 5-years-old and had a Superhero birthday party blowout! The costumed guests included four Spidermans, two Batmans, Catwoman, Superman & Supergirl, Wonder Woman, and even Marvin, Wendy, and Wonder Dog! The house was decorated with superhero posters, two cakes were decorated (one as Spidey and the other as Captain America's sheild), the homemade games included superhero themes (Superhero Logo Bingo, Bullseye's Target Challenge, Captain America's Falling Star Toss, and an extensive round of superhero trivia). I had a blast helping put some of the costumes together. Zane was dressed as Iron Man and his brother as The Green Lantern
My wife Lori was the Riddler and I went as far as shaving my head to become Bullseye. My friend Ed Clapper designed a mold for the Bullseye forehead target and filled it with Deviant Liquid Latex. I then applied the mold with spirit gum and airbrushed it with Createx flesh colored paint. Here is a close-up of the target.
I was fortunate this month to get some great time with the family on a four-day trip to Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure. I highly recommend the Aladin musical at California Adventure and I also loved the fireworks display at Disney (see picture) and the extravaganza by the river.
- I am tennatively booked to do some bodypainting for the Denver Grand Prix later this summer. The assignment is to paint a couple of models in racing uniforms. I'll keep you posted as the news develops. Also I am looking forward to another CopperCon science fiction convention September 10-12 if all goes as planned.
